October 16, 2013CSA week 20 October 16th 2013
In The Box:
1 bunch Rainbow Chard
1 or 2 Potimarron or Delicata squash
1 bunch Beets
1 bunch Parsnips
2 lbs Yukon Gem Potatoes
1 stalk Brussel Sprouts
1,2 or 3 Red Onions depending on size
2 Bell Peppers
The annual milestone of the first frost was crossed Monday night, relatively early but not completely unexpected given the clear nights we’ve had lately. The dryer weather has been welcomed by every farmer I know in the valley as we all hustle to get fields cleaned up, worked down and seeded into cover crops. The box this week is a good indication of what you’ll see for the last five weeks of the CSA season. A rotating cast of hearty greens, roots, winter squashes with a few random items thrown in for good measure. Leeks, a usual suspect in fall CSA boxes were a crop failure for us this season, so sadly no potato leek soup for us this year. It may require a late night scrumping mission into our neighbor’s field so we can make at least one batch on a cold winter night.
This is the time of year when we ask for any feedback on the season so far and try to find the time to start planning for next season. Good or bad we would love to hear from you.
With the transition to the new farm scheduled to be completed by mid December, decisions we make over the next few weeks will have serious impact on how things play out next season. Starting field planning from scratch after so many years on the old farm is a daunting task especially as we head into the busy season for the newly aquired ornamental tree nursery business. The website for the nursery, while still under construction, is coming together and you can check it out at plumleeacres.com.
Thank you for supporting our farm and family this season!
Enjoy,
Dave, Lori and the crew
