As we reach the halfway point in the 2013 CSA season it is mildly disturbing that most of the analogies I can find for the farm(s) right now involve references to Vaudeville or circus acts. A perplexing combination of plate spinning, cat herding, and seeing how many clowns I can fit into a VolksWagon. I am the ringmaster (minus the top hat and tails) doing my best to maintain this three ring circus.
It must be almost September, the month when the crew looks at me with faces that ask “so, when are going to hire four more people?” and the discussion of self cloning is had on small farms around the valley.
The new hires never come and the pace and chaos will ebb just as surely as the lessening of daylight. We continue to work with one eye looking forward to the fall and one on the task at hand. These are critical times as far as fall and winter crops go. Getting them into the ground in time to allow them enough of a growing window before they slow down in the cold wet days to come is essential. The annual speculation process among local farmers begins as we gauge how much of a wager we will gamble on the elements. How long do you push the planting calendar in hopes of a mild early winter? How much expense are you willing to risk on crops that may never meet the edge of a harvest knife?
Our inherent optimism has us pushing, pushing; we’ll put in one more bed of turnips, one more round of salad greens, one more clown in the VW.
For those of you that haven’t tried Downpour Coffee’s fantastic selection of varietals and roasts through our CSA, their coffees are now available in 8oz. jars at the P’s and Q’s Market in the Woodlawn neighborhood (1301 NE Dekum.)
A quick reminder that there are Creative Growers Farm raised pork shares available from our farm hand Cain. Happy animals raised well!
Enjoy,
Dave, Lori and the crew
